16U 12 Counties Report

16U Boys Report

So the outcome news was 4th/4, no wins, no sets. On this occasion this was only to be expected. 4 selected players were unavailable for one reason or another including our top two players meaning everyone was playing hugely out of position in the team order.

So the focus for the day from the outset was on what they could each get out of the day and learn from the exposure to high level u16 county tennis. Our opposition was Essex, Notts and Beds. All of them arrived with very strong teams on paper.

Daniel was pulled in last minute to play at number 1. Exactly as he did last year, so a good progress gauge.

Last year he was buzzing at just having had the opportunity to play against some top players, who he recognised were just too good. He won no more than a couple of games but competed hard throughout.

This year he was way more competitive with 4-2 4-2 losses against all of them. A huge step up.

Jack played at number 2, despite still being in the u14 age group. Oddly, in my time captaining him through the age groups, Jack has often had his best results when playing up the order. It provides greater freedom for him to play, with less expectation. Once again Jack jumped in against some very strong opponents and though winless, gave his all for the county cause.

Charlie was on debut, and having to play up at number 3. He had a great attitude. He turned up with confidence and wasn’t at all over-awed. He competed well throughout 3 tough matches and learnt (as all newcomers to county tennis do) that patience is a key attribute to nurture! Charlie was very receptive throughout the day and now looks forwards to his first experience of u18 county training in a few weeks time.

Reuben was called in to play at number 4, though still, incredibly, in just the u12 age group. We knew it would be exceptionally challenging for him playing these giant 16 year olds, but his performances at county closed had earnt him the opportunity.

As the day went on Reuben settled more and more after the shock of match 1 and did tell me he really enjoyed the experience and the opportunity, which was great to hear.

Onwards and upwards for all these boys in county colours!
