8U Boys Report
The annual U8 County Cup competition took place at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull on Saturday 26th April.
Northants were represented by Ailbe, Dylan, Gabriel and Oliver, all playing for Northants for the first time.
The counties we competed against were Warwickshire, who had an A and B team and Oxfordshire.
Our first match was against the Warwicksire B team, a very nervous team lost 5-1, but the majority of matches were very close, with Ailbe picking up a singles win. The next match was against Oxfordshire, Ailbe and Dylan lost to a very strong 1 and 2 but Gabriel and Oliver had outstanding wins to make it 2-2, we then went 3-2 up as Dylan and Oliver played an outstanding doubles winning 10-3, Gabriel and Ailbie had a match point but narrowly lost 11-9 to make the score 3-3.
We then played the unbeaten Warwickshire A team, singles wins by Dylan 10-1 and Oliver 15-13 in very tense battle made it 2-2 after the singles, we then proceeded to win both doubles matches to win 4-2.
The referee then asked us to play a tiebreak shoot out against Oxfordshire to decide that match, if we won it we would be the overall winners on the day, if Oxfordshire won then Warwickshire A would be the winners, Ailbe and Oliver played against the two very strong Oxfordshire players and put up an outstanding performance but eventually lost 10-8 to leave us in third place.
This was a great days tennis played with a high level of sportsmanship and so pleasing to see our players improving after every match, in I hope just the start of many years representing Northants in the future.
