14U Boys County Cup Report

The annual U14 County Cup competition took place at Boston Tennis Club on Saturday 3rd May and Sunday 4th May.

Northants were represented by Jack, Kajetan, Arjun, Matthew and Senan. The counties we competed against were Derbyshire and Isle of Man on the Saturday and Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire on the Sunday. 

We faced a strong Derbyshire team in our first match, all matches were very competitive with Arjun gaining a fine win at three 4-2,4-3, Jack’s match at one was very close but he eventually lost in the match tiebreak, both doubles matches had tiebreaks but we ended up losing 5-1. This did not really reflect the closeness of the match. The next match was against the Isle of Man. Jack, Kajetan, Arjun and Senan all won their singles matches in straight sets, Jack and Matthew, Senan and Kajetan both combined to win their doubles matches to complete a 6-0 victory. The first match on Sunday was against Lincolnshire, Arjun gained another fine win at three 4-2,4-1, Matthew lost in a titanic match, losing the first set 11-9 in the tiebreak, winning the second 4-2 but losing the deciding match tiebreaker 10-7, Jack and Kajetan took their first pair in the doubles to a tiebreak but we ended up losing 5-1. The final match was against the unbeaten Nottinghamshire team, our only win was at three where Matthew had an outstanding win after losing the first set 12-10 in the tiebreak, winning the second set 7-1 in the tiebreak and eventually closing it out 12-10 in the deciding match tiebreaker but another 5-1 defeat.

This was an excellent weekend of very competitive tennis with numerous close matches often against much higher ranked opposition at very welcoming and hospitable venue.

The team was a pleasure to be involved with and I hope they see this as a stepping stone to greater things in the future.
